Activity 1: In The Beginning
According to Māori mythology, much of Aotearoa New Zealand was formed when Māui, a powerful demigod, fished it out of the sea. Legend has it that Māui created a magical fish hook from the jawbone of his grandmother and that one day he took his hook, boarded a boat, and rode out into the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Once at sea, he threw his magical hook into the water and caught a fish. This ‘fish’ was actually the North Island of New Zealand! In honour of this legend, the North Island of New Zealand is sometimes referred to as Te Ika a Māui or ‘Māui’s fish’ and the South Island of New Zealand is sometimes referred to as Te Waka a Māui or ‘Māui’s canoe’.
Three Fun Facts About New Zealand:
1. New Zealand Is One Of three Countries that has two official National Anthems There Names Are: God Save The Queen And God Defend New Zealand
2. The Two Main Languages Are English And Moari
3. When You Are In New Zealand You MUST Drive On The Left Side Of The Road
Activity 2: North And South
The country of New Zealand is made up of two main islands – the North Island and the South Island. Approximately 77% of the New Zealand population live in the North Island. Many of these people (including our Summer Learning Journey design team) live in Auckland city. Auckland is a great place to live with lots of amazing parks, beautiful waterways and stunning scenery to enjoy. It is also a busy, vibrant city with many cafes, museums, galleries and theaters to visit. I feel lucky to call Auckland my ‘hometown.’ Now It Is Time To Think About Your Home Town. What Is Special About Where You Live? On Your Blog Describe Your Home Town. Be Sure To Include Describing Words (Adjectives) In Your Post.
My Home Town In Christchurch. It Is Special To Me Because Most of My Family Grew Up Here. Christchurch Is A Huge Town In 2016 There Was Over 374,900 People Living Here. All Of My Mum's Side Of The Family Lived In Christchurch There Hole Entire Life. It Is Also Special To Me Because Everything I Do In My Life Is In Christchurch.
Bonus Activity: Ice, Ice Baby
Antarctica is the world’s coldest continent. Even though it is made up of ice, it is also the driest continent in the world. In fact, it hasn’t rained there for nearly 2 million years! It is home to many animals such as whales, seals, birds, and fish. There are no permanent human residents (people who live there all the time) in Antarctica, however scientists do visit and stay in Antarctica for a while to study it.This year the airline, Air New Zealand, filmed their safety video in Antarctica. They used some fabulous actors from Hornby Primary School in Christchurch. Just like on aeroplanes, we also need to keep safe and be smart online. We need to think about the type of information we are sharing online, who we are sharing information with, and how to have a positive digital footprint.
I am a student at in Uru Mānuka. In 2020 I was a year 8 and in 2021 I will be a year 9. This is a place where I will be able to share my learning with you. Please note....some work won't be edited - just my first drafts, so there may be some surface errors. I would love your feedback, comments, thoughts and ideas.

My Holiday Recount
In Writing we are learning to elaborate on our ideas and use a hook at the start of our writing. We wrote a recount about our holidays. My hook is Aggggghhhhh that`ts all the people heard from me at Wycolya Park. I have elaborated on my sequence of events I used wow words to elaborate on ideas.
My Hoilday Recount
Aggggghhhhh that’s all the people heard from me at Wycolya Park.In the holidays Me, Mum, Zane and Rocky and Tyson went to Wycola Park. We went just to have some fun together.
First of all we went on the slide. We were acting like the boss of the park. The way we were acting like the boss of the park is we were pretending to boss everyone around. Then we went down again and hit our head on the bark. I went head first because my brother pushed me down. We made a humiliation of ourself.
Next we wanted to go on the monkey bars. We swung like a monkey. We sat on them. We looked like a monkey. I could not reach the bars.
Then we went on the swings. Me and Zane jumped off the swing. We both went flying off the swing when we jumped off. I landed on my back with the stitch it was super painful.
After that we went to the flying fox. We went zooming in the air. We waited for our turn. We had a blast.
It was a fantastic holiday and I would love to go back again.
